Chelsea Opens Talks With Bayer Leverkusen To Sign Kai Havertz
Havertz is wanted by several clubs this summer
Chelsea have begun talks with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Kai Havertz this summer ahead of Manchester United, according to reports.
The Blues are poised to go on an incredible spending spree having already sealed the transfer of Ajax star Hakim Ziyech earlier this year.
Timo Werner is set to become a Chelsea player after the London club agreed terms with the striker and his club, RB Leipzig.
Chelsea will pay Werner’s £54million release clause and Frank Lampard wants to pair the goalscorer with his international team-mate, Havertz.
The Guardian claim Chelsea have contacted Leverkusen about signing Havertz after Lampard green lit the transfer.
Lampard wants to add another forward to his starting line-up and Havertz has been one of the stand-out players in the Bundesliga since the season restarted last month.
Havertz has scored five times in four league appearances and is a big attraction to Chelsea and Lampard due to his versatility.
Havertz plays with Werner for Germany
The 20-year-old can play on the wing, upfront or through the middle and is open to a move to England as the next step in his career.
Chelsea have been unable to make any signings in the last two windows due to a transfer ban and are desperate to make up ground on Premier League leaders Liverpool – who are unlikely to make any big additions this summer.
Early talks with Leverkusen have given Chelsea hope they can secure Havertz’s signature for a fee in the region of £70million, rather than the £90m asking price being touted in the German press.
