Samuel Eto’o To Face 10 And Half Years In Prison

The prosecution has asked that the Cameroonian is sentenced for that length for defrauding the Treasury for almost €3.5 million during his time playing for Barcelona.

If the prosecution is successful, Eto’o must also pay a fine of over €14 million for four counts of tax fraud.

Eto’o’s representative, Josep Maria Mesalles, will also face trial.

The treasury have found the striker guilty of simulating his image rights of two companies – one Spanish and one Hungarian. As a result, Eto’o earned millions from his sponsor Puma as he wasn’t subjected to income tax.

By the end of his Barcelona career, Eto’o defrauded a total of €3.46 million. According to the documentation provided by the Treasury, Eto’o earned between 1.5 and three million each season with Puma.

As the prosecution states that Eto’o was the owner of those particular rights, and they believe he should be taxed at the maximum rate (45%).

For those of you that don’t know, Eto’o is still currently playing – despite being 35-years-old. He finds himself in the Turkish Super League, playing for Antalyaspor, where he scored 20 goals in 31 appearances last season.

Eto’o has enjoyed an incredible career, winning three La Ligas and two Champions Leagues with Barcelona and a Serie A and another Champions League with Inter Milan.

He also enjoyed spells with Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League.
